How much does a business AI agent cost in 2026

Updated September 13, 2026

The AI agent is the step after the chatbot: it does not just answer, it works. It reads emails and opens tickets, checks orders and flags anomalies, drafts quotes. The price difference versus a chatbot is not in the AI — the models are the same — but in the permissions, controls and integrations needed to let software act inside a company without causing damage.

Price ranges

Single-task agent

€5,000 – 15,000

One process, done well: triaging inbound email, extracting data from documents, drafting replies. A human stays in the loop and approves.

Integrated agent

€15,000 – 40,000

Reads and writes in your systems: opens tickets, updates the CRM, prepares orders. Most of the cost is integration and the rules about what it may do alone.

End-to-end process

€40,000 – 80,000

A whole flow automated with multiple agents and human checkpoints: from customer email to entered order. Needs serious design of permissions, logs and edge cases.

Then come running costs: AI model usage runs from tens to a few hundred euros per month depending on volume, plus maintenance. A serious quote puts them in writing; whoever promises the do-everything agent for €2,000 is selling you a demo.

What actually moves the quote

  • Autonomy: an agent that proposes and asks for approval costs half of one that executes alone — the latter needs error-proof controls, limits and logs.
  • Integrations: every system the agent must read or write (ERP, CRM, email, e-commerce) adds days.
  • Data quality: if the information the agent needs is scattered or dirty, half the project is cleaning it up.
  • Edge cases: the happy path is quick to build; the value is in what the agent does when a document is ambiguous.

Where to start without getting burned

The right project starts from your most repetitive, measurable process — email triage, data extraction from documents, pre-working quote requests — with a human approving. In 4–8 weeks you see real numbers: time saved, errors, unhandled cases. With those numbers you decide whether to expand. Starting from the "complete process" without this phase is buying blind.

Frequently asked questions

Chatbot versus AI agent: the difference?

A chatbot answers whoever writes to it; an agent works even when nobody does: checks, extracts, prepares, executes. They share the models, but the agent needs integrations and controls — the real cost item.

Does my data end up with the AI model providers?

It depends on the design: you can choose what leaves (often only the strictly necessary text), use contracts excluding training on your data, or EU-cloud models. Put it in the requirements: cheap now, expensive later.

What if the model gets it wrong?

It will: a serious project plans for it. Well-built flows keep human approval on expensive steps and full logs on everything. Distrust anyone promising "zero errors".
